Description

Care and Feeding of Your Daily Practice:  Working With the Unbounded View

Led by Jeff and Sally Alworth

There are many challenges in maintaining a daily practice, in keeping it fresh and alive. When our practice begins to feel dry and unproductive, it becomes harder to find our way to the cushion or feel it is having any real benefit. One of the most powerful antidotes to this habit is leavening meditation--and daily life--with the "unbounded" view. Many of the prayers and aspirations of the Dharma point at this view, from the simple Bodhicitta prayer, in which we vow to establish all beings in Mahamudra, to the esoteric wish that our "own face know itself" from the Aspirations for Mahamudra. In this series of five classes, we will explore how to use the unbounded view to give our practice new interest and urgency.

Each class will address a topic of exploration to help nurture the unbounded view. Sally and Jeff will begin with a text or reading to introduce the topic, followed by a short discussion. This will be followed by a session of contemplation on the topic. Finally, we'll discuss carrying practices to work with during the week. As in past years, in weeks 2 to 5 we will begin the class with an open discussion about our experiences and discoveries from the past week as we begin to build a toolkit for ongoing practice.

Attending all five classes over the course of the month-long series is preferable, but not required. Please feel invited to attend some of the classes even if you have scheduling conflicts with others.
